Siam

the name given to the Thai tribes by their eastern neighbors and first used in the 11th and 12th centuries. The name subsequently came to be used for the area that is now Thailand. The precise etymology of the word is unknown. The name entered the European languages through the Malays in the 16th century. In its relations with European governments, the Thai kingdom (Thailand) used the name Siam until 1939 and again from September 1945 to August 1948.
