SS 433

[‚es‚es ‚fȯr‚thərd·ē′thrē]
(astronomy)
A stellar object that shows evidence of ejection of two narrow streams of cool gas travelling in opposite direction from a cool object at a velocity of almost one-quarter the speed of light; the beams execute a repeating, rotating pattern about the central object once every 164 days.

The team noticed that the same line features are also observed at SS 433, a close binary consisting of an A-type star and most probably a black hole with a mass less than 10 times that of the Sun.
They suggest that "bona-fide" ULXs with luminosities of about million times that of the Sun must belong to a homogeneous class of objects, and SS 433 is an extreme case of the same population.
Once a mystery, the variable star SS 433 in Aquila was the first "microquasar" discovered.
FOR 25 YEARS astronomers have been scratching their heads over the energetic star SS 433, a "microquasar" in Aquila.
His research work at the camp involved spectroscopic studies of the accretion disk surrounding the neutron star SS 433 using the 60-inch reflector on Mount Lemmon, as well as analysis of CCD photometry of globular clusters in M31, the Andromeda Galaxy, with the 61-inch reflector on Mount Bigelow.
Margon (now at the Space Telescope Science Institute) and his collaborators found that one remarkable X-ray binary known as SS 433 displayed spectacular jets.
Seen here in unprecedented detail are the supernova remnant W50 and its dynamic heart, SS 433. Large sources such as this present an interesting technological challenge.
Why, for instance, must every introductory text have a section on SS 433? What basic idea are students expected to learn from it?
