On Atlantic coast of ME, east of Portland; organized Apr 4, 1854 from Lincoln County. Name Origin: From an Abnaki Indian word probably meaning 'land of the mouth,' or 'mouth of the river,' for its location at the confluence of the Androscoggin and Kennebec rivers where they meet the Atlantic
