Santa Cruz

(săn`tə kro͞oz), city (1990 pop. 49,040), seat of Santa Cruz co., W Calif., on the north shore of Monterey Bay; inc. 1866. Surrounded by hills and redwoods, the city is a seaside city with many fine beaches. The huge municipal wharf (built in 1913) is one of its most popular attractions. In addition to tourism, there are electronic and food-processing industries. Agriculture flourishes in the area. Points of interest include a replica of a mission established there in 1791. The Univ. of California at Santa Cruz is there. The city sustained much damage as a result of the 1989 earthquake that hit northern California.

a province in southern Argentina, on the Patagonian plateau. Area, 243,900 sq km. Population, 83,000 (1970). The capital of Santa Cruz is Río Gallegos. Crude oil and natural gas are extracted in the north, and coal is mined in Río Turbio. Santa Cruz is noted for the raising of sheep and the initial processing of wool. There is a slaughtering industry in the coastal cities of Santa Cruz Province.

It is the economic center of eastern Bolivia. Its industries process foods, such as sugar and rum, and turn out leather and wood products. Oil, brought in by pipeline from the Camiri and Coranda oil fields, is refined in El Palmar, near Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz is the center of an agricultural region, in which sugarcane, coffee, cacao, cotton, tobacco, and rice are grown. The city has a university. Santa Cruz was founded in 1560.

Originating in Lake Argentino, it flows across the Patagonian plateau in a deep valley and empties into the Atlantic Ocean in the northern part of the Bahía Grande, forming a common estuary with the Río Chico. The mean flow rate at Lake Argentino is 675 cu m per sec. The estuary of the Santa Cruz is navigable as far as the port of Santa Cruz.
