, town (1990 pop. 33,445), Oaxaca state, S Mexico, on a wide bend of the Tehuantepec River not far from the Gulf of Tehuantepec, an arm of the Pacific. The town is on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

Similarly, the Spanish often hyphenated native place-names with a Christian prefix, so Texupa--which is a Nahuatl renaming of the Mixtec town Nun Ndaa, both meaning "place of blue"--became modern-day Santiago Tejupan, Culhuacan became San Juan Evangelista Culhuacan, and Tehuantepec became Santo Domingo Tehuantepec. Even in the maps, the Spanish would alphabetize the prefix of the town's name, while its root word remained a pictograph.
