In south-central WI, northwest of Madison; organized Jan 11, 1840 (prior to statehood) from a territorial county. Name Origin: Shortened form of Saukie, a local Indian tribe; French form is Sac. Meaning of the name is unclear: possibly 'something sprouting up' or 'yellow earth' from which their tradition says their first male sprang.
