Sault Ste. Marie

 

a city in Canada, in the province of Ontario. Population, 80,300 (1971). Sault St. Marie, a port with a freight turnover of 5 million tons, is situated on the St. Marys River, which connects Lake Superior with Lake Huron. It is a trade and distribution center for an agricultural region, dominated by dairy cattle breeding. Industries include ferrous metallurgy and the production of bearings, metal structural members, and mining equipment. The city also has a large pulp and paper plant; plywood and lumber are manufactured.

Marie, founded in 1668, is a port on the canalized St. Marys River, which connects Lake Superior with Lake Huron. A bridge connects the city with the city of Sault Ste. Marie in Canada. Industries include wood processing, shipbuilding, and the production of leather goods and pulp and paper.
