Savinykh, Andrei Grigor’evich

 

Born Nov. 18 (30), 1888, in the village of Mershiny, in what is now Kirov Oblast; died Feb. 26, 1963, in Tomsk. Soviet surgeon. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1944); Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1943).

Savinykh graduated from the medical faculty of the University of Tomsk in 1917; beginning in 1931, he headed the subde-partment of hospital surgery. His principal works dealt with the surgical treatment of diseases of the organs of the thoracic and abdominal cavities. Savinykh proposed many surgical operations, including a new method of gastric resection. He also developed special instruments for operations on the stomach and esophagus.

Savinykh was one of the organizers of both the Tomsk branch of an institute of blood transfusion and the first institute of oncology in Siberia. He was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1943 for his work “Transabdominal Mediastinotomy and Its Significance in Surgical Practice.” He was a deputy to the second through fifth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Savinykh was awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
