Schirra, Walter (Marty)

(1923–  ) astronaut, naval officer; born in Hackensack, N.J. He was chosen as one of the seven original astronauts (1959). He participated in three missions into space: Sigma 7 (1962), Gemini 6 (1965), and Apollo 7 (1968). He resigned from NASA (1969) and developed his business interests in Denver, Colo.
