Schmitz, William J. (Joseph), Jr.

(1937–  ) oceanographer; born in Houston, Texas. He joined the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 1967, and became a senior scientist there in 1979. He made major contributions to low-frequency ocean circulation.
