For other families of beetles such as Leptodiridae, Nitidulidae and Scydmaenidae, their presence in the ant colonies is part of their diagnosis (Arnett et al., 1980).
Good-bye Scydmaenidae, or why the ant-like stone beetles should become megadiverse Staphylinidae sensu latissimo (Coleoptera).
We used multiple regression, as before, grouping beetle responses by a single factor, family, with 16 categories, one for each family: (1) Anobiidae, (2) Bostrichidne, (3) Carabidae, (4) Corylophidae, (5) Cryptophagidae, (6) Curculionidae, (7) Elateridne, (8) Lathridiidae, (9) Leiodidae, (10) Oedemeridae, (11) Pselaphidae, (12) Ptiliidae, (13) Scarabaeidae, (14) Scydmaenidae, (15) Staphylinidae, and (16) Tenebrionidae.
Dominant beetle families in the assemblage were Staphylinidae (particularly the subfamilies Pselaphinae, Aleocharinae, Paederinae, and Osoriinae), Scydmaenidae, Ptiliidae, and Curculionidae (particularly Scolytinae and Curculioninae), with 50-150 species each (Appendix A).
Larvae of the Scydmaenidae (ant beetles) resemble woodlice and are oribatid specialists.
