, region, Marne and Seine-et-Marne depts., N France, E of Paris. Rich in wheat and cattle, it is famous for Brie cheese. The smaller section of the region (Brie française) forms part of the Île-de-France and is very fertile.

Seine-et-Marne

 

a department in northern France, located on the Brie plateau. Area, 5,900 sq km; population, 756,000 (1975). The department’s capital is Melun. Industry employs 32 percent of the labor force, and agriculture 7percent (1968). Commodity farming includes the raising of wheat, corn, and sugar beets; cattle and sheep are also raised. In addition to machine building and printing, Seine-et-Marne has a food-processing industry, which includes the production of cheese, and a paper industry.
