Dezhnev

a Soviet icebreaker. During the Great Patriotic War, the Dezhnev was a patrol vessel (SKR-19) in the Northern Fleet. On Aug. 27, 1942, in the bay of the island of Dikson, the Dezhnev fought an unequal battle with the German heavy cruiser Admiral Scheer, which attempted to destroy the port and the ships in Dikson’s bay. The heroic action of Dezhnev’s crew and the coast artillery battery prevented the German cruiser from fulfilling its mission. The Admiral Scheer suffered a series of direct hits by shells, ceased firing, and escaped. The crew of the Dezhnev suffered heavy losses in the battle but fulfilled their military duty to the motherland.
