The capital and chief port is Aracaju. Sergipe is a backward agricultural state. Large-scale land ownership predominates, and precapitalist relations are still preserved. Cultivated crops include sugarcane, cotton, rice, agave, tobacco and cassava. There is extensive meat livestock breeding in the arid regions. Oil and gas are extracted, and common salt is mined. Sergipe has textile, leather, and food-and-condiment industries.
