sesquiterpene

[¦ses·kwē′tər‚pēn]
(organic chemistry)
Any terpene with the formula C15H24; that is, 1½ times the terpene formula.

Sesquiterpene

any of the hydrocarbons with the general formula C15H24 (trimers of isoprene) or oxygen derivatives of these hydrocarbons. The name “sesquiterpenes” indicates that the molecular weight of these compounds is 1.5 times greater than that of the monoterpenes (from the Latin sesqui, “one and one-half times”). Sesquiterpenes, like terpenes, occur in essential oils and balsams and account for the characteristic odors of plants.

Our studies showed both oils to have the low reactivity to DPPH assay ([EC.sub.50] = 5 0 0 [micro]g/mL and [EC.sub.50] = 489 [micro]g/mL) and moderate reactivity to ABTS assay ([EC.sub.50] = 92 [micro]g/mL and [EC.sub.50] = 88 [micro]g/mL), which may be associated with the high concentrations of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons in NR and TR essential oils (60.2% and 64.8%, resp.).
