On southwestern border of AR; organized Oct 17, 1828 (prior to statehood) from Hempstead County. Name Origin: For Ambrose Hundley Sevier (1801-48), territorial legislator (1823-27) and delegate to U.S. Congress (1828-36), later U.S. senator from AR (1836-48), and minister to Mexico (1848)
