Planococcus citri has a PGL sex-determination system of the lecanoid type (Schraeder 1921; Nut 1980, 1990): the paternal genome in somatic tissue is inactivated at the blastula stage of development but can be detected as a heterochromatized body in the nucleus of all cells; in germ-line tissue, the paternal genome is eliminated during spermatogenesis.
The former biological models share a common feature: their chromosomal sex-determination systems are evolutionarily recent.
