a city (since 1943) and the administrative center of Shakhun’ia Raion, Gorky Oblast, RSFSR. Railroad station on the Gorky-Kirov line. Population, 20,000 (1974). Shakhun’ia has a logging and timber distribution establishment, a sawmill, a wood-products plant, a drawn-thread embroidery workshop, a dry-milk combine, and enterprises serving railroad transportation.
