The occurrence of springtails of the family Sminthuridae have been reported in laboratory colonies of Cyphomyrmex costatus Mann (Formicidae: Myrmiciane) (Kweskin 2004), but there are no records of this group of microarthropods in any other fungus-growing ant nests.

The globular springtails, from the Sminthuridae family, consume native plants, fungi and algae, causing plant damage and stripping environments of food sources usually reserved for native species.
Independientemente de la variacion en el patron de abundancia en las areas experimentales, se confirmo que las familias dominantes en el agro-ecosistema arroz fueron: Isotomidae, Sminthuridae y Sminthurididae, las cuales contribuyeron con 89, 73 y 89% del total de individuos en Barro Blanco, Dos Bocas y Tocumen, respectivamente (Tabla I; Figura 1).

Las mas abundantes fueron Isotomidae, Entomobryidae, Hypogastruridae y Sminthuridae. El AC mostro mayor similitud entre biotopos que entre cuencas, mientras que en el ACC la variable mas importante para explicar la distribucion y abundancia de los Collembola fue la humedad.
