Smoot, George Fitzgerald, III

(1945–  ) astrophysicist; born in Yukon, Fla. At the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, University of California: Berkeley, from 1971, he led a study of cosmic background radiation that in 1992 resulted in a picture of the universe shortly after the big bang some 15 billion years ago.
