Somali Basin

 

a basin in the northwestern part of the Indian Ocean, between the African coast and the Arabian-Indian and Mascarene underwater ridges. It stretches for about 2,800 km from northeast to southwest and about 1,800 km from northwest to southeast. The maximum depth is 5,824 m. The bottom is covered with ooze.

This current is also the reason why the Somali basin is one of the world's most productive areas for fisheries, another sector that can be further developed with oil revenues barring any oil spills.
CTF 151 is responsible for counter-piracy across a large area of operations in the Northern Indian Ocean, while the prime focus is on the chokepoints for maritime traffic - Bab Al Mandeb strait at the southern end of the Red Sea and the Somali Basin.
