Sonni Ali Ber (his name means "Ali the Great") has enjoyed an unsavory reputation among Arab chroniclers as a cruel and rapacious tyrant; this was perhaps due to the unorthodox blend of Islam and pagan African religious rites practiced under the Sonni monarchs; this policy served to maintain a useful alliance between the Muslim urban merchants and the pagan pastoralists on whom they depended.
