Sonsonate

(sōnsōnä`tā), city (1993 pop. 46,101), capital of Sonsonate dept., SW El Salvador. It is the commercial center of a rich agricultural region, where cacao, coffee, sugar, tobacco, Peruvian balsam, and subsistence crops are produced. The city was founded in 1524 by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de AlvaradoAlvarado, Pedro de
, 1486–1541, Spanish conquistador. He went to Hispaniola (1510), sailed in the expedition (1518) of Juan de Grijalva, and was the chief lieutenant of Hernán Cortés in the conquest of Mexico.

a city in El Salvador; capital of the department of Sonsonate. Population, 49,000 (1972). Sonsonate has a railroad station. It is the center of the country’s major cattle-breeding region. It has enterprises for the production of foodstuffs, leather, and tobacco goods and the processing of balsam of Peru. Sonsonate was founded in 1524.
