Sault St. Marie, a port with a freight turnover of 5 million tons, is situated on the St. Marys River, which connects Lake Superior with Lake Huron. It is a trade and distribution center for an agricultural region, dominated by dairy cattle breeding. Industries include ferrous metallurgy and the production of bearings, metal structural members, and mining equipment. The city also has a large pulp and paper plant; plywood and lumber are manufactured.
