a deep-seated suppression of consciousness accompanied by the retention of reflexes. An individual in a sopor is passive and apathetic, although he is capable of reacting to such strong external stimuli as calls and persistent repeated commands. Sopor may occur with craniocerebral trauma, brain circulatory disorders, and inflammatory and toxic afflictions of the brain. A worsening of this precomatose condition leads to complete loss of consciousness and the onset of a coma.
