Southern Floristic Kingdom

Southern Floristic Kingdom

the aggregate of floristic regions in the southern hemisphere. The range and floristic relationships of the regions of the southern floristic kingdom are variously described. Those who view the southern floristic kingdom as one of the fundamental units of floristic regionalization assign to it the extreme south of South America (south of 41°−42° S lat.), the subantarctic islands (Magellan-Antarctic region), the New Zealand region (or subregion), and the Australian region (sometimes regarded as a special floristic kingdom).

Sometimes the extreme south of Africa—the Cape Region (regarded by some as part of the Palaeotropical kingdom or as a special floristic kingdom)—is also assigned to the southern floristic kingdom.
