Diplomatic relations were established between the USSR and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania on July 12, 1964. The two countries concluded agreements on trade (Oct. 17, 1966), on the delivery of machinery and equipment to Mauritania (protocol, Oct. 17, 1966), on the exchange of information between TASS and the Government Information Service (Feb. 25, 1966), and on cultural and scientific cooperation (Dec. 29, 1967).

In a joint communique of Dec. 30, 1967, the two countries noted that conditions were favorable for the development of relations in various fields. Agreements were concluded on cooperation in radio broadcasting (July 15, 1968), on cooperation in marine fishing (Feb. 15, 1973), and on air transportation (July 11, 1974).
