Diplomatic relations were established between the USSR and Nigeria on Oct. 1, 1960-Jan. 12, 1961. Agreements were concluded on trade (July 2, 1963, and Oct. 29, 1971), on air transportation (Jan. 26, 1967), and on economic and technical cooperation (Nov. 21, 1968). In addition, agreements were concluded on cultural and scientific and technical cooperation and exchange (Apr. 22, 1970) and on mutual recognition of diplomas and academic degrees (May 18, 1973).
A joint communique of May 29, 1974, expressed a mutual desire for deeper friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation.
