Starachowice

 

a city in Poland in Kielce Województwo, situated on the Kamienna River. Population, 45,200 (1974). Stara-chowice has a truck plant and a wood-products industry.

In 1972, a war crimes trial in Germany ended in acquittal for the ex-police chief accused of liquidating the Wierzbnik ghetto, sending its residents off to Treblinka and to the Nazi slave labor camp at Starachowice. Browning (History, University of North Carolina) was appalled by that verdict, and it eventually led him to research and write this book, which uses eyewitness accounts from 292 survivors of the camp to determine what actually happened there.
