Those are just some of the challenges facing the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge, near the tip of the Alaska Peninsula, in trying to recover a sea duck called the Steller
's eider (Polysticta stelleri).
Teams searched large areas on foot, recording and mapping all occurrences of Steller
's or spectacled eiders, as well as predators such as gulls, jaegers, and foxes.
But Robyn Steller
also gathered together some very personal testimonials from people who have been inspired by the forest, including an essay entitled 'Worshipping in Monga Cathedral' by visual artist and educator John Reid.

One day in October the staff are sitting at their indigo iMacs, busily putting the finishing touches on a newspaper ad aimed at readers in Alaska, to counter criticism of environmentalists following a successful lawsuit that restricts fishing in Steller
sea lion habitat (see "Sea of Uncertainty," page 48).

's eider duck from the icy Arctic coasts of Siberia and Alaska made a recent rare appearance in British waters, spending a few days off Scotland's east coast.
This area, a transition zone between boreal and temperate forest, enjoys a diversity of species uncommon to the rest of Russia, and many other rare and endangered species are found there: Amur leopards, Himalayan bear, and Steller
Scrub, pinon, and Steller
's jays, along with Clark's nutcrackers, all cache pinon nuts for winter food.
The debate has come to focus on the endangered Steller
sea lion as an indicator species.
