step function

[′step ‚fəŋk·shən]
(mathematics)
A function ƒ defined on an interval [a,b ] so that [a,b ] can be partitioned into a finite number of subintervals on each of which ƒ is a constant. Also known as simple function.
More generally, a real function with finite range.

Suppose that s : [a,b] [right arrow] X is a step function; by Theorem 22 we have that the integral (HS) [[integral].sup.b.sub.a] (s, dg) exists.
The STEP functions are used to add motion to system in order to prevent the system simulation abnormity caused by abrupt speed variation in the simulation process.

Since the original step function reveals no change except at the interface, the differentiated function is equal to zero everywhere but the interface must have infinite increase.
