Ethiopian Christianity has had its heretics--for example, the Stephanites
(a medieval Ethiopian Christian sect that insisted on keeping Saturday Sabbath and other Hebrew Biblical laws) but this is a country that has never been without its Jews.
Soon he began shipping some extraordinary silver mineral specimens back to New York, including the largest and best polybasite specimens known, large clusters of "poker chip" stephanite
crystals, fine acanthite specimens and a few very fine pyrargyrite specimens.
Since then Fresnillo has become one of the world's greatest silver districts, and has also yielded superb specimens of crystallized pyrargyrite, stephanite
, acanthite and polybasite.
Among exhibitors who put in "general" displays of Canadian minerals were the Canadian Museum of Nature; the Smithsonian; the Rice Northwestern Museum; the American Museum of Natural History; Wendy and Frank Melanson; Rod and Helen Tyson (two wide, very spectacular cases); and the Royal Ontario Museum (viewing this case, we learned that there exist brilliant iridescent specimens of stephanite
and polybasite from the Husky mine, Yukon, which are 6 cm across).
Among the best known are the iridescent polybasite and stephanite
specimens produced mostly in the 1960's to 1980's, most notably from the Husky mine.
Wondrous must have been the specimens of wire silver, stephanite
, acanthite, etc., which disappeared into the smelter--good specimens of anything from the Comstock Lode are exceedingly rare today.
For earlier scoops on the wonderful iridescent stephanite
and polybasite crystals collected originally in the late 1970's from the Husky mine near Mayo, Yukon Territory, see my show reports from Tucson 1996 (vol.
Mexican sulfosalts were still trickling out of Fresnillo, Mexico; fine stephanite
, pyrargyrite, acanthite and polybasite were available.
In the mid-1970's, however, exploratory drilling revealed a hidden system of fabulously rich veins of solid pyrargyrite, acanthite, stephanite
It yields primarily small specimens of crystallized pyrargyrite, with rarer miargyrite (in nearly black, lens-shaped crystals), polybasite (in hexagonal plates), stephanite
and freibergite (both in complex, gray, highly lustrous crystals).
The bigger news out of the Yukon, however, and one of the major offerings of this show, was about 20 superlative thumbnail specimens (and two miniatures) of iridescent stephanite
and polyhasite from the Husky mine, near Elsa, Yukon Territory.
At the Main Show, Dave Bunk presented (as he did last year) a shelf full of brilliant, small specimens of Mexican silver minerals, mostly from Fresnillo, Zacatecas, including manically high-lustered groups of sharp crystals of acanthite, stephanite
, polybasite and pyrargyrite from various levels of the Proana mine, recovered at different times within the last year.
