In southeastern MO, southwest of Cape Girardeau; organized Jun 21, 1835 from Cape Girardeau County. Name Origin: For Capt. Amos Stoddard (1762-1813), an officer in the Revolutionary War and acting governor of LA Territory (1804-05)
