In central SD, north of Pierre; created Jan 8, 1873 (prior to statehood) from Potter County. Name Origin: For Fort Sully, which was named for Gen. Alfred Sully (1821-79), its builder and commander, famous as an Indian fighter and cited several times for bravery during the Civil War
