In southern WV, east of Beckley; organized Feb 27, 1871 from Greenbrier, Monroe, and Mercer counties. Name Origin: For George William Summers (1804-68), U.S. representative from VA (1831-45) and judge of VA's eighteenth judicial circuit (1852-58)
