Sumner William

(1840-1910) early US sociologist, As an evolutionary theorist, influenced particularly by Herbert SPENCER, Sumner's work is today relatively little discussed. However, his best-known work, Folkways (1906), bequeathed a number of terms which have retained currency See MORES, FOLKWAYS, ETHNOCENTRICISM, SOCIAL DARWINISM.
