The railroad purchased the land and built the resort to attract more passenger traffic to the West; it was the first ski resort to be built as a destination resort. In 1964 it was sold to a land-development corporation; in 1967, Bill Janss, a former Olympic skier, became sole owner. The Hemingway Memorial, on a bluff overlooking a swift-flowing trout stream, was dedicated in 1966.
