Sorrento

(sōr-rān`tō), town (1991 pop. 16,459), Campania, S Italy, on the Sorrento Peninsula, which separates the Bay of Naples from the Gulf of Salerno. Beautifully situated, it is a tourist center and a summer resort.

Sorrento

 

a city in Italy, in Naples Province, Campania. Port on the peninsula of Sorrento, on the southern shore of the Bay of Naples. Population, 14,400 (1968). Industry includes small-scale textile manufacturing and fishing. In the surrounding regions fruits and wine grapes are grown. Sorrento is a summer health resort and tourist center.

Sorrento was the home of the Italian poet Torquato Tasso. M. Gorky also lived here from 1924 to 1928.
