Sutartine

Sutartine

a type of old polyphonic Lithuanian song. Chiefly a women’s work song, the sutartine was also sung at weddings and sometimes as accompaniment to dances. Its style is characterized by parallel seconds, syncopation, and a free two-voice polyphonic mode. These characteristics have been used in instrumental folk music and in symphonic and other compositions by Lithuanian composers.
