NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory was able to capture a stunning photo of the Swan Nebula. It is known as one of the largest star-forming regions in the Milky Way galaxy.
One of these is M16, the Eagle Nebula or Star Queen Nebula, of Hubble Space Telescope photographic fame with its "Pillars of Creation." The other is Ml 7, most often called the Omega Nebula, but also variously known as the Swan Nebula, Horseshoe Nebula, and Checkmark Nebula (see Howard Banich's Going Deep column, S&T: Sept.
The graceful Swan Nebula in Sagittarius was first seen in 1764 by the youthful De Cheseaux who described it as having "the perfect form of a ray or the tail of a comet." A few weeks after his discovery it was seen by French comet hunter Charles Messier.
