On the southern border of WY; largest county in WY. Created as Carter County Dec 27, 1867 (prior to statehood) from Laramie County; name changed Dec 13, 1869. Name Origin: For the Sweetwater River, which flows through Fremont County, at that time still a part of Sweetwater County. Originally named for Judge W.A. Carter
