synchrocyclotron

[¦siŋ·krō′sī·klə‚trän]
(nucleonics)
A circular particle accelerator for accelerating protons, deuterons, or alpha particles, in which the frequency of the accelerating voltage is modulated to maintain synchronism with the frequency of the particles which spiral outward and attain energies at which the relativistic mass increase becomes significant. Also known as frequency-modulated cyclotron; synchrophasotron.
