TDM network

A network that transmits data in dedicated end-to-end circuits comprising 64 Kbps digital channels. TDM networks evolved from the analog voice networks of the telephone companies. They are widely used for digitized voice and data in the form of digital signal (DS) circuits made up of T1, E1 and OC-1 lines and multiples thereof (see DS). See TDM. Contrast with packet network.

This is driven by them wanting to converge voice and data traffic over a single network, and also to support home and small offices at a reasonable cost, versus doing so in a TDM environment. Also, the common denominator of the SIP protocol opens the door to many applications that may have been prohibitively complex and/or expensive in a TDM world to another tier of users that may have not have the staff or expertise to deploy those applications in a TDM environment.
On attendant PCs the intuitive and easy to use console interface is identical to Intuition Acclaim Gateway and Intuition Acclaim Classic editions for traditional CS1000 TDM environments, allowing businesses to migrate from TDM to IP at their own pace or run a mixed environment without affecting the experience of end users.
A case in point is Concerto Software, which may have its roots in voice-over-IP (VoIP) but which is rapidly grafting on expertise in TDM environments.
"NEC provided us with IP adapters that plug into each phone, providing the IP connection for each unit, and they work just as well in TDM environments."
Genesys 7.2 also supports a mix of IP and TDM environments as well as hybrid environments that require multi-vendor platforms.
