tag switching

tag switching

A layer 3 switching technology from Cisco that is used in large enterprise networks (WANs). It uses tags (labels) containing forwarding information. Tag switching uses routers (Tag Edge Routers) that sit on the periphery of the network and make forwarding decisions for all the routers in the backbone. They append this information to each packet in fixed positions in the header that can be quickly examined by interior backbone routers (Tag Edge Switches), saving the time involved in decoding the packet and its associated table lookups. See MPLS.

Code switching falls in three types intra-sentential, inter-sentential and tag switching (Poplack, 1980).Firstly, inter-sentential code switching takes place between sentences, clauses and turn takings.

Tag switching has been condemned by the NFU, which said the actions of individual farmers was completely at odds with the industry's determination to stamp out bovine TB.
Cisco rolled out tag switching, 3Com had FastIP, Ascend offered IP Navigator, and so on and so on.
Surprisingly, however, Ranjeet Sudan, Cisco's product manager for tag switching and MPLS, says, "We don't stress the performance increase in tag switching any more." Sudan explained that, although you can get similar performance improvements from Layer 3 switch/routers, tag switching turns out to offer unique benefits for doing "traffic engineering." For example, network engineers can use tag switching to do load balancing by defining two or more equivalent routes across a backbone.
With the integration of Cisco IOS(R) software, the BPX 8600 switch is the first carrier-class ATM switch to deliver IP services through Tag Switching. Tag Switching represents the industry's first end-to-end implementation of MPLS, giving service providers the privacy characteristics and quality-of-service (QoS) benefits of ATM and the universal connectivity of IP.

Some would argue that the introduction of IP and tag switching, both of which can use cell switching, improves routers as a vehicle for WAN consolidation.
Tag switching distributes IP routing functionality between tag edge routers and tag switches.
