Tetepare

Tetepare,

(tā`təpä'rā), raised coral island 46 sq mi (118 sq km), S Western prov., Solomon Islands, SW Pacific, separated from New Georgia by the Blanche Channel. It is the largest uninhabited island in the South Pacific; settlements there were abandoned in the 1800s. Most of the island is now protected.

Photographs taken from police helicopters showed debris lining the foreshore and damaged houses on the coasts of Rendova and Tetepare, as well as deep scars on hills and cliffs caused by landslides.
The residents of Baniata are the descendents of those who used to live on Tetepare Island, the largest uninhabited island in the South Pacific and one of the last remaining relatively intact terrestrial and marine ecosystems of the region.
