at Houston; coeducational; state supported; est. 1947 as Texas State Univ., attained university status 1951; predominantly African American. It has schools of arts and sciences, technology, business, education, law, pharmacy and health sciences, and graduate studies.

Synopsis: Located in Houston, Texas Southern University was established in 1947 as an "emergency" state-supported university for African Americans, to prevent the integration of the University of Texas.
