Many in-house or custom applications were written in older programming languages such as FORTRAN, often with only a textual user interface. Others have been created with spreadsheets and other off-the-shelf tools, where the problem of version control and deployment become major issues; many different copies can proliferate throughout the organization, raising the risk of errors and misunderstood results.
