Born Aug. 14, 1814, in Mandal; died Aug. 25, 1876, in Christiania (now Oslo). Norwegian painter.
Tidemand studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1832 to 1837 and at the Academy of Arts in Düsseldorf under T. Hildebrandt, W. von Schadow, and K. F. Lessing from 1837 to 1841. The founder of 19th-century Norwegian genre painting, Tidemand espoused the principles of the Düsseldorf school. In such paintings as Net Weaving (1862, Art Gallery, Trondheim), Tidemand depicted everyday life in the remote Norwegian countryside with ethnographic precision.
