Tikhaia Bay

Tikhaia Bay

an inlet on the western coast of Guker Island in the archipelago of Franz Josef Land in the Barents Sea. Tikhaia Bay measures 2 km in length and has a maximum width of 2.5 km at its entrance. The shores are mountainous; a glacier is sliding into the sea toward the bay. The bay freezes in winter, and there are ice drifts and icebergs from mid-July to mid-October. The expeditionary party of G. Ia. Sedov, on the schooner Sviatoi Foka, spent the winter of 1913–14 in Tikhaia Bay without suffering pressure from the ice (hence the inlet’s name, which literally means “Pacific Bay”).
