(tĭl`bərē), part of the borough of ThurrockThurrock,
borough and unitary authority (1991 pop. 124,300), SE England, on the Thames River. The borough includes Tilbury, which has large docks that are part of the Port of London.

, Essex, E England. Tilbury Fort originated under Henry VIII; it was rebuilt and strengthened in the 17th cent. Queen Elizabeth I, in 1588, reviewed royal troops there when the Spanish Armada threatened England. The Tilbury docks, begun in 1882, make Tilbury the main container port of the Port of London.
